Today I was out buying a rugby ball and boots in a local sports shop in London. Next to the counter was a freezer packed full of these little tubs of Whey Hey protein ice cream, something I’d never seen before.

I’ve tried to make protein ice cream in the past by freezing protein powder and greek yogurt. It turned out OK, but not amazing. So I was intrigued by this new product.
Anything labelled as ‘healthy’ or a ‘sports supplement’ (read about Lucozade) is often packed full of hidden harmful sugars (watch Sugar: The Bitter Truth video), so I was skeptical. I checked the label first. Here’s what the chocolate Whey Hey ice cream contains.

Not bad at all! 22g of protein isolate per tub, 11g of fat (5g of which is saturated) and 9g of carbs, of which none is sugar! Ok so it’s not very nutrient dense and you wouldn’t want to eat this every meal. But add some veggies along side it and you’ve got a tasty between meal snack.

And finally – how did it taste…?
Well I can honestly say in my opinion it tastes as good as real Ben & Jerry’s ice cream (no I’m not sponsored by Whey Hey ice cream or anything). I LOVE this product.
Right, I’m off to buy a crate of the stuff.
Visit the official Whey Hey site.

Hello Ryan,
Thanks for this post about Whey Hey Ice Cream.
I am from London to and would like to know where you bought this from.
Have not seen it sold anywhere?
Many thanks
Guy
Quick update – according to the official website, Whey Hey Ice Cream will be available in Holland & Barrett from April 2012. Good times. In the meantime, check out this map for the London stores that currently sell it.
Hi Guy,
I got mine from a shop called Sheen Sports on Upper Richmond Road. I believe they also sell them in a shop in Balham. The official website has a list of places that sell it, but unfortunately it appears to have been hacked and isn’t working right now.
I did message them on Twitter and they are preparing for a nationwide rollout this April, so I’m hoping the ice cream will be in supermarkets soon!
